What is Massage?

Massage is one of the oldest methods of healing, with evidence of the practice being found in many ancient civilisations such as those of China, India, Egypt, Rome and Greece. Probably the most common form of massage in the UK is Swedish or Classic Massage.

As with most types of massage it uses pressure, kneading, rubbing, rhythmic tapping, vibration, rocking and friction to relieve discomfort, pain or tiredness in the muscles and soft tissues.

By increasing the lymphatic and blood circulation, massage promotes the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the muscle cells, the elimination of waste products and toxins, decreases fluid retention and swelling.

Massage relaxes the muscles, thus relieving nerve compression and pain and enhancing nerve perception as well as helping the body function more efficiently. Releasing the superficial muscles, which are easily reached by the therapist, can also release tension in the deep, hard to reach, underlying muscles. It has been shown to reduce pain and joint stiffness e.g. low back pain, osteoarthritis of the knee. Relieving muscle and nerve pain can also affect associated problems which are not directly related to the muscles.

Apart from being wonderfully relaxing and soothing, massage can positively affect overall health and lead to a deep sense of well-being in the receiver so reducing stress and improving mood.

Massage therapists most commonly use hands to deliver the treatment, but other parts of the therapist's body can also be used such as forearms, elbows or feet. In addition, hot smooth stones and warm bamboo rods can also be used with great effect.

How often do people have Massage treatments?

For some it is a special treat to be indulged in a few times a year (see our gift vouchers). For others it may be an essential part of their week, enabling them to switch off or power down and cope with the stresses of an exhausting weekly schedule. Others use it as and when required as a healing tool to relieve back, muscle or joint pain whenever it occurs.

How does Massage feel?

It feels amazing.

A warm, soothing and caring touch invites you to let go and just relax. It can calm tense or troubled emotions and make you feel nurtured and enhance your self-esteem.

Enter a world filled with warmth, soothing energies and pleasant sounds and smells.

It can also be energizing and leave you feeling uplifted and refreshed.

What can I expect during my Massage treatment?

The massage you receive will be based on a combination of our professional judgement and recommendation and your feedback and choice.

The massage therapist will most commonly use hands to deliver the treatment, but other parts of the therapist's body can also be used such as forearms or elbows.

In addition, I have on offer Hot Stone  and Warm Bamboo Massage .Customized treatments can combine different aspects of all or any of these.

You will lie on a comfortable, padded massage couch and a choice of oils and music will be available. Your body will be covered with warm towels when that part of it is not being treated.

At the end of the treatment you can choose to have the excess oil removed with warm towels or to leave the oils on the skin to be absorbed.
